I could envision the Oilers going Philly/Weber and offering $7,510,464 to Seth and seeing if Columbus will match - they probably will. The Oil just better hope that of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd picks, that 1st aint a lottery pick
EDIT: Not sure if its still the case, but the Oil owe the Bruins their 2nd round pick for either this year's draft (didn't happen) or next year. So they can't do that |

"As it stands the Jackets have less than four million in cap space. They can go over 10% during the off-season but even so they don't have a lot of wiggle room; especially if a team comes around and offers Jones, say, seven years at 7.5 million per. That would only cost a team a 1st, 2nd and 3rd round pick."
One correction (and I only just learned this): The maximum number of years that an offer sheet can be divided by for compensation purposes is five years. So if a team were to offer $7.5M x 7, that's $52.5M, but the compensation would be FOUR 1st round picks because $52.5M / 5 = $10.5M. I'm high on Seth Jones, but that's a lot to give up for one player.
Now, if a team wanted to offer $7.5M x 5, then I'd say it's worth the risk (although Columbus probably still matches and figures it out later). |

Except that the cap is going to rise about 3 million. It may look tempting to OS Jones, but CBJ will be able to match quite easily at the end of the day. |

I believe the total contract value can only be divided by a maximum of 5 years for RFA offer sheets. So in this example 7.5 x 7 = 52.5 mill / 5 years = AAV of 10.5 million which equates to 4 first round picks .
A team could very well give him a 7.5 x 5 year contract, but then they'd be overpaying for him without buying out some valuable UFA years where he will be in his prime...not really the most ideal situation.
Best option for a team like the Oilers would be to offer whatever it takes for him to bite for 2 years (or whatever takes him to his last year of RFA), which could very well be 7.5 mill *yikes*. Then at least they won't be completely (frank)ed when they try to negotiate with him after his contract expires. |

I know less about RFA O/S rules & regs than I do about Corsi - I find it amusing that some GM's worry more about offending other GM's than making their team better - |

Yup, this is correct. I fixed the post. Thanks for pointing that out. |

That's fine. Offer him a ton, make them match, and laugh as you compound their salary cap issues. |

But unless you're a divisional rival, why bother pissing off a potential future trading partner? |

And Oilers can't do any offer > $5.6m because they won't have their 2nd round pick for next year's draft

Personally, I go after a low cost, high probability of success offer sheet.
Idk…someone like pickard in Colorado might be able to be had for the right amount of money.

Anyone remember that pointless Steve Bernier - David Backes fiasco? |

Problem is, the player has to be on-board as well.
That’s why these things are so rare imo.

This is why Jarmo should of traded down and package a bad contract in that trade .....now we are stuck watching Dubois develop in the minors. |

How far down do you trade in that situation and who do you pick? |

The oilers can make an offersheet and the second round pick owed to Boston gets deferred to 2018. |

You probably could have had Backlund & the #6 & taken Brown or Keller (or even Tkachuk) for that #3 & dumped the Hartnell contract. Who knows, the way Vanc & Edmonton were looking at Dmen, Dubois may have fallen to 6. Oh well, Columbus left value on the table, Edmonton won huge & Calgary was ecstatic Tkachuk dropped to 6th. |

I don't think that's possible.
Since they didn't offer this year's 2nd round pick, that means next year's pick (2017) has to be offered to them. I don't think you can defer twice with the compensation pick. (and since its been 1 year since Chiarelli is signed, the 2018 draft would be the 4th draft since he was hired) |
